Guard Handbook
Introduction
As a prison guard, it is your duty to ensure that various events are held for the prisoners. Another job you have is to ensure no contraband is being passed around inside of the prison, this will allow you to further complete your duty of keeping all prisoners safe.
Trainings
There are various training's you can complete during your time in HMPS which include:
Basic Training: N/A (initial training)
Glock Training: Prison Officer+
Drone Training: Senior Officer+
K9 Training: Entry TR Officer+
Divisions
This is the list of divisions inside of HMPS, more information can be found here.
Recruitment: Senior Officer+
Tactical Response Group: Senior Officer+
Transport: Prison Officer+
These divisions have trainings, usually hosted by the Divisional Command team.
Contraband
Everything inside of the prison other than a toothbrush is considered contraband unless a valid reason can be provided to support the possession of said item. In the prison, prisoners will be looking for tools to make weapons or even to attempt an escape. The main way weapons are brought into the prisoner is by them being smuggled in by visitors this can be stopped by ensuring all visitors are searched upon arrival.
Panics/Lockdowns
Lockdowns should be made when there is a situation ongoing, therefore, requiring prisoners to return to cells to stay safe. If panic is activated unless told otherwise the prison should be put onto lockdown enabling the alarms around the prison. During the time the prison is on lockdown, you should attempt to communicate to PD and NHS about the situation which is occurring this will allow them to be best prepared to assist. Panics should only be used if a guard is held hostage or if the backup is immediately required meaning if it can be resolved by guards use a lockdown instead of making a panic which is the last resort.
Moving Inmates.
Inmates who arrive in prison will spawn in a cell. In order to move an inmate, you have to follow a few rules and a checklist. This checklist is intended to help keep the safety of the prison inmates and prison guards. These rules will also help you know when and when not to move a prisoner out of their cell.
Procedure
Let the inmate in the cell know that in order to be let out they have to be quiet and respectful.
Tell the inmate to face the back of the wall and put his hands up.
Make sure your baton or taser is ready in case the inmate has not been searched.
Open the cell door, move in and search him.
When to not let the inmate out
An Inmate is screaming, being loud, or being disrespectful.
An Inmate is not complying with your orders.
In case of any situations where this occurs, you should let them know that they will be let out once they are following the correct rules above. If they continue, you ignore them until they are following the rules. You may add time or place the inmate in a segregation unit depending on the situation. Refer to the sentencing guidelines handbook if unsure.
Identification
If anyone asks you to provide your identification such as your name and badge number (perm id) you must provide it. You can do this by using /wc this will show your details to the nearest person.
Sentencing Guidelines
You are only allowed to add a maximum of 15 months to a prisoner's sentence which should only be done in certain circumstances (i.e prisoner caught with a firearm, constantly being very rude and disrespectful, constantly screaming and shouting, etc)
If you feel a prisoner is at suicide risk (i.e jumping off balconies) - - escort him/her to segregation or the medical ward and wait for a medical assessment from a member of the National Health Service.
If a prison guard/prisoner has been taken hostage by another prisoner and he/she demands their sentence to be lowered, you may reduce their time by anything up to half of their current sentence. You must finalize negotiations before you reduce the time.
Prisoners who are making threats towards other guards or prisoners should be dealt with accordingly. If you feel like they should be moved to an area of safety then you can escort them to a segregation unit or their cell depending on the situation and you may increase their time by 5 months should you feel it’s needed.
Searching prisoners for contrabands should be done regularly (i.e before or after yard time) you must search prisoners when they leave their cells whilst following procedures. If you find contraband on a prisoner you may add a few months onto their sentence if you feel it’s needed.
If you find a prisoner with a shank you may add a maximum of 10 months onto he/she sentence should you feel this is needed. If they have used it in a harmful manner then consider adding an extra 5 months depending on the situation.
Should you witness a prisoner taking someone hostage, you must panic and initiate the full prison lockdown in order to protect other prisoners from any harm. Any prisoners involved in the said hostage situation should be removed from the general population and moved to segregation units.
When dealing with criminals who trespass into the prison, you should detain the suspect and escort them to a cell within the prison. Depending on the severity of the situation you should sentence him/her for up to 5 months. You also must search before sentencing and if found with illegal items you may sentence up to 10.
If a prisoner asks for you to reduce their sentence then you must explain to him/her that they need to do something productive (i.e gym, laundry, or food) for time to be reduced. This should be done in small amounts such as 1/2/3/5 months. You must never add/reduce time upon request.
Valid reasons to send someone to segregation: Inmate is found having an illegal item in their possession, Inmate is refusing to follow orders after multiple chances, Inmate is caught trying to bribe a guard, Inmate is starting a fight, Inmate is trying to escape.
Segregation
Upon acts of violence, disobedience, disrespect, or anything else that disturbs the peace and quiet of the sanctuary that is the correctional institute, a prison inmate may be sentenced to segregation. Depending on their actions they may have to sit in there for a period of time, anything up to 15 minutes. During this time they are to be isolated without human contact. While serving their sentence in segregation they can't participate in any of the events above.
Examples of reasons to sentence someone to segregation:
An Inmate is found to have an illegal item in their possession.
An Inmate is refusing to follow orders after multiple chances.
An Inmate is caught trying to bribe a guard.
An Inmate is starting a fight
An Inmate is trying to escape
